At the Forefront of Africa’s Largest Methanol Project

Brass Fertilizer & Petrochemical Company Limited (BFPCL) is developing one of Africa’s most transformative gas industrialization projects. Located on Brass Island in Bayelsa State, the $3.8 billion greenfield development combines Africa’s largest methanol plant with a world-scale gas processing plant, supported by pipelines and associated infrastructure that together form part of the Brass Oil and Gas City (BOG) Free Zone.

Scheduled for commissioning in 2028, the twin-train methanol complex (2 × 5,000 mtpd; 10,000 mtpd in total, or ~3.6 mtpa) will position Nigeria among the world’s leading producers, while also supplying cleaner fuels and petrochemical feedstocks to serve both global markets and Nigeria’s industrial base.

Project Background and Development

Brass Fertilizer & Petrochemical Company Limited (BFPCL) was created as the project company to develop a fully integrated methanol plant with a gas processing plant, pipeline network and supporting infrastructure within the Brass Oil and Gas City Free Zone on Brass Island, Bayelsa State. This landmark investment will monetize Nigeria’s abundant gas resources and expand the country’s petrochemical base.

The project anchors on a Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement with the RAEC JV to supply 2.2 Tcf of gas over 25 years from nearby non-associated gas fields. The gas processing plant will have an initial capacity of 340 MMscf/d, scaling to 1 Bcf/d in three phases. At full capacity, the facility will dedicate 760 MMscf/d to methanol production and 240 MMscf/d to compressed natural gas (CNG) for domestic industries and transport. A new pipeline system will connect stranded fields within a 60 km radius to the Brass hub, aggregating gas for both export and local markets.

On the commercial side, firm offtake agreements have been secured with leading global commodity traders such as Trafigura and BP, Glencore alongside, whose trading arm ranks among the world’s largest in energy markets, strengthening the project’s bankability. Regulatory engagement has been extensive, with most approvals already obtained, while its location within a Free Zone provides fiscal incentives tailored for large-scale industrial and export developments.

Economic and Strategic Impact

The Brass project is expected to generate turnover of more than $1.8 billion annually, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings and government revenues. Beyond exports, methanol production will supply feedstock for local industries such as plastics, paints, textiles, adhesives, and fertilizers, reducing imports and catalyzing downstream manufacturing. The development will create up to 15,000 jobs during construction and about 5,000 permanent operational roles, with wider opportunities across services and supply chains.

Strategically, BFPCL strengthens Nigeria’s Decade of Gas agenda by monetising previously stranded reserves and channeling them into value-added processing. The integration of a gas processing plant, pipelines, methanol production, and domestic CNG supply positions Brass as a hub for both industrial growth and regional energy trade.

Sustainability is embedded in the project design. A carbon capture system capable of recovering 95% of CO₂ emissions will ensure all methanol output is classified as Blue Methanol, giving Nigeria an early foothold in the low-carbon fuels market. By combining large-scale gas monetization with carbon abatement, the Brass project advances national industrial and climate objectives, anchoring Nigeria as both a competitive global producer and a leader in cleaner energy development.
